Our mission is to teach the great game of basketball in an instructional, enjoyable, team-oriented manner. Our league is for beginning, maturing and experienced skill levels while playing with friends, old and new, in a fun, yet competitive atmosphere!
HYA Basketball is truly a community effort. From our volunteer parent coordinators and coaches to our great sponsors. We are fortunate to have their support and it enables us to help keep local recreational basketball affordable for families. Please be sure to thank them!

Important Message - Please Read Below
We are very excited to announce that HYA Basketball will be returning to the format that has made this a successful program for the past 40+ years! Our 3rd/4th, 5th/6th and 7th/8th grade leagues will be back to playing our games in our own league with equal playing time and the traditional "AB" format. This wouldn't be possible without the support of the community! The schools of SAU 90 and SAU 21 allowing us to use their gyms, the Sports Barn on Drakeside Road making itself available will ensure that we can host our traditional 1 hr of practice a week and Saturday morning games.

2022-2023
How is scheduling done? Do we play teams from other towns?
HYA Basketball is excited to get back to it's recreational league roots! HYA teams will play only other HYA teams within their league. We plan for this season to return to the format we had used prior to Covid. For those new to the program, please continue through the FAQs.
Who is coaching?
Coaches are the lifeblood of HYA. They are the ones that make all of this work! Teams will still be coached by volunteer parents. All coaches must complete a background check and go through concussion protocol training. We need volunteers! On your registration, be sure to check if you are interested in taking up the challenge and helping to make this program strong for our community!
How are teams selected?
HYA will hold mandatory ratings clinics on Tuesday, October, 4th and Thursday October 6th. A more detailed schedule is on the HYA Basketball home page. Players will be ranked based on skill level and teams will be determined by a name-blind draft using appropriate software. All coaches are asked to help in the ratings clinic. This is done in an effort to make teams as even as possible.
Will there be a HYA travel program offered?
YES! We are currently looking into a new league and a separate registration will go out mid-October for travel registrations. Players will need to be registered for HYA Rec in order to participate in HYA Travel.
When are regular (non-travel) HYA games?
Games are scheduled on Saturdays starting at 8:15 am and will finish by 1 pm. A scrimmage is tentatively scheduled for Saturday Nov 19th, and games will be played on Saturdays December 3rd, 10th, 17th, January 7th, 14th, 21st, 28th and February 4th, 11th and 18th.
What is the format for games?
Games are 10 minute quarters with running time except for shooting fouls. Players will play 2 quarters, either in the 1st & 3rd quarter or the 2nd & 4th quarter. Teams will follow strict guidelines about playing time based on the "AB Grid" and player ranking. All of this is done to ensure that all players receive equal playing time and that games are as fun and competitive as possible.
Are there playoffs?
YES! Single elimination playoffs at the end of the season.
What about the PreK/K league?
At this point, we are unsure if we can secure gym time to run our Saturday morning Prek-K program.
Is this season going to be the same as last year in the RBL league at the RIM?
This year will definitely be different. We are going back to the way HYA has served the community for past 40+years. We are looking forward to a great season!
WE DO NOT TAKE REQUESTS. Unless for specific medical reasons/physical limitations and coaches looking to work together. Personal requests make rostering difficult for coordinators who aim to please everyone. Please keep in mind that great efforts are made to ensure rosters are properly balanced and that no matter what team your child is placed on we guarantee he or she will have FUN!
Basic guidelines for properly balanced teams are as follows:
Families with 3 or more players participating are capped at $160 In order for the registration system to recognize that your family is registering multiple players, please register all of your players at this time. On the Review Page, there is a link near the bottom to “Register Another Player” - please click on this link to ensure that all of your family’s players are registered within the same order. Failure to do so will result in improper processing of the family discount rate in the system.
The success of the HYA Basketball is dependent on our parent volunteer coaches. We look to provide one Head Coach and one or more Assistant Coaches per team. No experience is needed as we will provide you with all the tools necessary to help guide our young players. Above all else - ENTHUSIASM - is all a good coach needs to be productive. If interested, please indicate so when the registration asks. We value our coaches highly and are grateful year in and year out for their time and dedication. Thanks in advance.
