HYA BASKETBALL IS BACK!!!

2024-2025 SEASON

Important Message - Please Read Below

We are very excited to announce that HYA Basketball will be continuing the format that has made this a successful program for the past 40+ years!  Our 3rd/4th, 5th/6th and 7th/8th grade leagues will be playing our league games with equal playing time and the traditional "A/B" format.  Our Coed 1st and 2nd grade program for Saturday mornings will be back at Centre School.  All league games begin on Saturday, November 23rd.

This wouldn't be possible without the support of the community!  Thanks to the schools of SAU 90 and SAU 21 allowing us to use their gyms and to The Sports Barn for making itself available.   This will ensure that we can host our traditional 1 hour of practice per week and Saturday morning games.

Frequently Asked Questions

2024-2025

How is scheduling done?  Do we play teams from other towns?

HYA Basketball is excited to continue its recreational league roots!  HYA teams will play only other HYA teams within their designated league.  For those new to the program, please continue through the FAQs.

Who is coaching?

Coaches are the lifeblood of HYA.  They are the ones that make all of this work!  Teams will still be coached by volunteer parents.  All coaches must complete a background check and go through concussion protocol training.  We need volunteers!  On your registration, be sure to check if you are interested in taking up the challenge and helping to make this program strong for our community!

How are teams selected?

HYA will hold mandatory ratings clinics on Monday September 30th (Boys) and Thursday October 10th (Girls).  Players will be ranked based on skill level and teams will be determined by a name-blind draft using appropriate software.  All coaches are asked to help in the ratings clinic. This is done in an effort to make teams as even as possible.

Will there be a HYA travel program offered?

YES! separate registration will go out mid-October for travel registrations. Players are required to be registered for HYA Rec in order to participate in HYA Travel.   Those registered for HYA Rec will receive an invitation for HYA Travel tryouts.

When are the games played?

Rec games are scheduled on Saturdays starting at 8:15 am and will finish by 1 pm.

What is the format for games?

Games are 10-minute quarters with running time except for shooting fouls.  Players will play 2 quarters, either in the 1st & 3rd quarter or the 2nd & 4th quarter.  Teams will follow strict guidelines about playing time based on the "AB Grid" and player ranking.  All of this is done to ensure that all players receive equal playing time and that games are as fun and competitive as possible.

Are there playoffs?

YES!  Single elimination playoffs at the end of the season.  The 3/4 leagues will have an end-of-season Round Robin.

What about the PreK/K league?

There will be no PreK/K League due to limited gym availability.

REQUESTS

WE DO NOT TAKE REQUESTS. Unless for specific medical reasons/physical limitations and coaches looking to work together. Personal requests make rostering difficult for coordinators who aim to please everyone. Please keep in mind that great efforts are made to ensure rosters are properly balanced and that no matter what team your child is placed on we guarantee he or she will have FUN!

Basic guidelines for properly balanced teams are as follows:

  • Equal amounts of players per teams.
  • 2 or more coaches per team. Coaches will be placed with their child’s team.
  • Equal amount of boys and girls [when applicable].
  • Even amount of players based on age and/or grade. [when applicable].
  • Even amount of players based on skill [when applicable].
  • 2 or more participants from the same town/school will be on same team [when applicable/possible].
  • Siblings [when applicable] will be placed on the same team.

FAMILY DISCOUNT

Families with 3 or more players participating are capped at $175 In order for the registration system to recognize that your family is registering multiple players, please register all of your players at this time. On the Review Page, there is a link near the bottom to “Register Another Player” - please click on this link to ensure that all of your family’s players are registered within the same order. Failure to do so will result in improper processing of the family discount rate in the system.

COACHING

The success of the HYA Basketball is dependent on our parent volunteer coaches. We look to provide one Head Coach and one or more Assistant Coaches per team. No experience is needed as we will provide you with all the tools necessary to help guide our young players. Above all else - ENTHUSIASM - is all a good coach needs to be productive. If interested, please indicate so when the registration asks. We value our coaches highly and are grateful year in and year out for their time and dedication.  Thanks in advance.
